This can only happen in Mulayam Singh’s ‘Uttam Pradesh’: A person finding mention in an FIR pertaining to a criminal attack, moving about in the corridors of power.

The Lal Bahadur Shastri Annexe Bhawan, which houses the CM’s Secretariat, is a high security zone but the security considerations are seemingly relaxed for those who have direct access to the CM. Akhilesh Kumar Singh, MLA from Rae Bareli Sadar, today visited some senior government officials in the annexe. ‘

Singh has been named in an FIR lodged in connection with the attack on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s election agent R.P. Singh, on Tuesday. Since, Singh is an elected representative of the people, he wasn’t denied access to the annexe.

One of the four persons mentioned in the FIR lodged by the election agent, no action has so far been taken against Singh. Though Rae Bareli police arrested three persons yesterday for their alleged involvement in the shooting, wherein the agent’s brother was injured, two of the arrested were not even named in the FIR. Police sources said the two were picked up for allegedly being party to the attack.

The other two named in the FIR, Pushpendra Singh and Deepak Singh, are still at large. Principal Secretary (Home) Anil Kumar said the police had issued orders for the attachment of the property of the accused and raids were on to arrest the missing duo.

However, the police has decided to go slow over Singh’s alleged involvement in the attack. IG (Lucknow Zone) V.N. Rai said his involvement was a matter still being investigated. Similar views were echoed by Rae Bareli district police chief B.R. Meena, who said, ‘‘is mamle ki vivechna ho rahi hai’’.
