Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world faces today and Hindu College chose to organise its annual debate, which started on Monday, on this important issue. The 6th Premchand Memorial International Invitational Parliamentary Debate has also seen participation by students from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Singapore.
“It’s great that students from Pakistan have come to Delhi, especially after the terror attacks in Mumbai,” Suchita Salwan, coordinator of the debate, said. She said the presence of foreign students sends the message that nothing should stop interaction between different countries.
While the first two days of the debate witnessed students from abroad debating with their Indian counterparts, the quarter finals held today saw Hindu College take on IIT, Delhi and three other colleges of Delhi University.
The unique feature of this debate is that it is conducted along the parliamentary structure of India.
Today’s topic was “Nuclear energy will destroy the world sooner than nuclear weap-ons”. In the debate between Hindu College and IIT, Delhi, the former spoke for the motion and said that owing to numerous countries producing nuclear energy, nuclear waste thus generated will have a life-threatening effect.
The IIT team held that with countries constantly at war, there are chances the world may be destroyed before nuclear waste reached a proportion whereby it could affect the entire world. The finals will be held on Thursday.
