He is Britain’s seniormost Asian police officer, a high-ranking figure in Scotland Yard and a force to be reckoned with. But it takes a brave man to throw himself into the controversy surrounding one of the world’s leading supermodels’ alleged drug abuse. That is what Tarique Ghaffur, the Assistant Police Commissioner of the British Metropolitan Police Force has done.

Ghaffur called upon Kate Moss, who fled to the US after newspaper allegations that she snorted cocaine, to return to the UK and voluntarily turn herself in to assist police investigations. This appeal came via national newspapers as Ghaffur said that he did not wish to set in motion a formal extradition order, but felt that events had gone on for too long without formal steps being taken.

Moss, who is estimated to be worth £40 m from various contracts with leading fashion designers, caused an international flurry when undercover photographs were published in The Mirror newspaper. The blurred pictures, taken by a mobile phone-camera, apparently showed the supermodel with her boyfriend snorting cocaine hence the tabloids dubbed her “Cocaine Kate”.

Moss then checked in to a leading US drug rehabilitation clinic. She has not returned to Britain as she would face arrest and police questioning.

After checking out from rehab, she has continued her work and public appearances. Presently, she is believed to be in Los Angeles with her three-year-old daughter, Lila Grace.

Ghaffur said: “We would like to appeal for her to return, see us and tell us her side of the story. It is in her interests, and everybody’s interests that she does this as soon as possible. There are others involved in the supply of the drugs. We anticipate being in the position of making arrests shortly.”

‘Unfortunate’: SC slams reports suggesting ‘pilot error’ led to Air India crash

The Supreme Court Monday issued notice on a plea seeking an independent and expeditious investigation into the June 12, 2025, crash of an Air India Boeing Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, which killed 260 people. The bench also termed as “unfortunate” media reports which indicated that “pilot error” was to blame for the crash, purportedly quoting some preliminary findings by the AAIB.
