
GUWAHATI, MAY 20: A major international arms supply racket in providing sophisticated guns to North-East insurgent outfits has been busted here and four suppliers arrested.
Describing it as a major breakthrough, city police authorities here said the gang members were arrested yesterday on a tip-off from near the Bodoland guest house in Khanapara on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
An AK-47 rifle, 105 rounds of ammunition, a revolver and three Chinese grenades were recovered from a specially constructed box in the insurgents8217; jeep, police said.
They said the racketeers smuggled in the sophisticated weapons from Myanmar to Shillong from Mizoram for sale to militants.
Stating that the arms were to be delivered to an agent here, police said the gang had sold 30 AK-47 rifles to the Bodoland Liberation Tiger BLT since 1998.
Documents and a diary containing addresses in Myanmar were also recovered from the four, identified as Lalhlupzuala, Lailiana and Lalithanga of Mizoram and Shyamal Chandra Das ofAgartala.
