After perfect weather conditions that brought scores down by some way on the first day, Arjun Atwal enjoyed the advantage of playing early on Friday to make the most of yet another bright and sunny day. However, Atwal failed to capitalise on this advantage and carded consecutive 74s.

The weather — which forecast some rain showers during the second round and 10mph winds — was excellent. However, the same could not be said for the scores, most of which were over par.

Tiger Woods carded a level-par 71 to remain at one-under, as did Michael Campbell, who shot a four-under 67 yesterday and a 71 today, keeping him at four-under at the halfway stage.

Former world number one Greg Norman, who played the first two rounds with Woods, carded a bogey-bogey-bogey finish to card a seven-over-par 149, which resulted in him missing the cut.

But there were a couple of low scores later in the day as Barry Lane carded a three-under 68 to head into the weekend in second place with a total of five-under-par, two strokes behind leader Thomas Levet, who was still out on the course at seven-under-par. Todd Hamilton carded a four-under 67 to tie for third place with a total of three-under-par so far.

ARJUN ATWAL
Atwal, who was among the first players on the course today, followed his first round 74 with yet another three-over-par 74 in the second round. However, unlike yesterday, his card was marred with five birdies — on the first, fifth, sixth and eighth and tenth holes and he made the turn in 40 strokes, four-over-par for the day. Though eight-over, he did recover a couple of strokes with birdies on the par-four 11th and 15th holes.

However, Atwal’s two round total will not be good enough to enable him to play on the weekend, as he was tied at 108th with most of the players still out on the course.

JYOTI RANDHAWA
Randhawa, who was still to tee off since he was scheduled to play in the latter half of the draw, will be among the last players out on the course today. Significantly, he is on the border of the projected cut — which is two-over-par — after his first round two-over-par 73 and needs to play par or better to stay for the weekend.

69 players are tied at two-over or better and Randhawa, who hopes to be third time lucky and make the cut this time around, just needs to keep his ball in play to ensure that he is among those playing at Royal Troon this weekend.
