JANUARY 21: Archbishop of Mumbai Ivan Dias has been elevated to the dignity of the Cardinalate.

The announcement came from Pope John Paul II in the Vatican during the recitation of the `Angelus’ prayer today, according to the Catholic Communication Centre (CCC) here.

Dias will be the third Cardinal Archibishop of the city, the previous two being the late Valerian Cardinal Gracias and Simon Cardinal Pimenta.

After his sacerdotal ordination in 1958, Dias had worked in Mumbai for two years and then joined the Vatican Diplomatic service.

Dias served in the Holy See embassies in Scandinavia, Indonesia and Madagascar and was subsequently posted to the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church in the Vatican as Chief of desk of several countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia, including China and the erstwhile USSR.

In ’97 he became the Archibishop of Mumbai.
