The Supreme Court pulled up the Centre on Thursday for not furnishing its response on the operation of unregulated slaughterhouses in the country. The court warned that it would stay the operation of all unregulated slaughterhouses if the Centre fails to file its response within the next two weeks.

Appearing for petitioner L N Modi, senior advocate Ranjit Kumar submitted that only a stay on the operation of all slaughterhouses would force the Government to file its response. Following this, the Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and P P Naolekar said that it would do so if the response does not come within two weeks.

The petitioner had sought proper regulation of slaughter houses in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which were reportedly posing environmental and health hazards to the people since they neither maintained proper hygiene nor installed effluent treatments plants.
