HYDERABAD, JANUARY 10: The Chandrababu Naidu government has secured the support of all major political parties in the state to oppose Karnataka’s plans to raise the height of Almatti dam to 524 ft, which would facilitate storage of 400 tmc of Krishna water as against the allocated 173 tmc.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who convened an all-party meeting here today, made it clear that Andhra Pradesh would not allow Karnataka to raise the dam’s height beyond 512 ft as per the award of the Krishna Water Disputes Redressal Tribunal.
The meeting discussed the legal strategy that AP would adopt during the hearing before a five-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court tomorrow. Senior counsel K. Parasaran, who is representing Andhra in the apex court, Irrigation Secretary P.K. Agarwal and a host of officials and legal experts briefed the political leaders.
Major Irrigation Minister M. Venkateswara Rao, Congress spokesman K. Rosaiah, CPM senior leader Koratala Satyanarayana, BJP state presidentChilakam Ramachandra Reddy and BJP legislature party leader N. Indrasena Reddy attended the meeting.
Both Karnataka and AP filed suits before the apex court in 1997. While Karnataka urged the court to stop AP from constructing ongoing projects across Krishna, AP prayed for a stay on Almatti works as the increase in the dam’s height would affect the state. The case is coming up before the five-member bench for the first time tomorrow. A large contingent of legal experts and officials left for Delhi this evening.
