Another sacrifice

8226; For a week after the declaration of the Maharashtra assembly elections results the saviours of the 8220;aam admi8221; and the Nationalist Congress Party were tied up in knots trying to decide who should be chief minister of the state.
It would have been prudent of the supreme leader who had 8216;8216;sacrificed8217;8217; the prime minister8217;s post to tell her disciplined followers to sacrifice rather than indulge in hard bargaining for the chief minister8217;s chair. In the 8220;tamasha8221; of negotiations between the Congress and the NCP the plight of the aam admi was relegated to the back bench.

It8217;s a dis-service

8226; Your editorial 8216;Ministry of Paranoia8217; October 22 about the ridiculous excuses put forth by the MEA on the CEC witnessing presidential elections in the US is very timely.
The MEA, correct name Ministry of Excuses in Abundance, has been a stumbling block in all our ventures and plans. They are exclusive in their unbridled failures. The 8216;8216;diplomats8217;8217; have created a host of enemies around us. Not one neighbour is either sympathetic or supportive of India8217;s policies and the MEA8217;s arrogance is abundantly demonstrated in its dealings with all countries who share a border with us. The supercilious and noncooperative attitude of MEA officials who are approached by Indians abroad is well-recorded. It is time the nation understood the damage caused to India by this not so elitist group of bumbling bureaucrats.

Time travellers

8226; I agree with the title of the article by Pamela Philipose and most of the contents, except the part about Prakash Jha 8216;I have looked into the future, it looks like the past8217;, IE, October 24. If he had something to say about Indira Gandhi8217;s Emergency, why did he have to wait till the BJP came to power and why did DD have to fund his project?

Decode this DNA

8226; K.S. Sudershan objects to the BJP8217;s promise, made before the general election, to promote Urdu, because he holds that language responsible for the 8220;vivisection of the country8221;. Urdu was born and grew up not in Peru or Korea but right here in Bharat. Should not other languages of the same provenance 8212; Sanskrit and Pali, for example 8212; be held equally guilty? Vivisection is ordinarily understood to mean the cutting up of a single living organism. Did not Sudarshan8217;s tribe hold, since long before 1947, that the Muslims who were separated by the dissection of that year were a different species entirely from the Hindus, never mind that they had lived together for centuries and never mind that they had once been sisters and brothers to one another?
Sudershan asks India8217;s Muslims and Christians to 8220;accept their Indian ancestry8221;. They have never denied it: it was always Shri Sudarshan8217;s tribe which did that and still does.

Unequal response

8226; Though the BJP has only fared marginally worse than the Congress both in the Lok Sabha and the Maharashtra polls, why has it allowed a defeatist attitude creep in?
