CHANDIGARH, May 20: Patiala lad Anoop and the young and upcoming city cricketer Yuvraj Singh played timely knocks to lead Pace XI to a convincing eight wicket win over fancied Malviya Club in the first N R Joshi Memorial cricket tournament here today.
Chasing Malviya Club’s 199 in 35 overs, Pace XI were home in the 24th over of their innings, thanks largely to Anoop’s 82 (66 balls, 12 fours, one six) and Yuvraj’s 67 (38 balls, nine fours, two sixes).
Earlier, Malviya Club, having some Amritsar players in their ranks, managed a decent looking total of 199 as Kulwinder Khanda and Sanjay Kumar made half-centuries. The team recovered from a disastrous start after opener Tarun Gupta was out fourth ball off the first over but Kulwinder and Munish Sharma resurrected their side with a partnership worth 71 runs for the second wicket. Munish made a patient 32 and after his departure Kulwinder had the hard hitting Sanjay as his partner. The two attacked the Pace XI bowling and raised visions of an imposing total.
Towards the end Davinder Mattoo and Sandeep came up with quick knocks of 20 each as Malviya Club set Pace XI a challenging total. Pace XI were never really troubled. In fact they had a 92 run first wicket partnership followed by the second wicket partnership of 90. Malviya Club bowlers had no clue as to where to bowl to the rampaging Anoop and Yuvraj.
Sohal XI will take on Chetna Club in the semifinal tomorrow.Scores: Malviya: 199 (Kulwinder 58, Sanjay 52, Munish 32, Yuvraj 2-34) lost to Pace XI: 200 for 2 (Anoop 82, Yuvraj Singh 67).
