Andhra acid attack victim dies in hospital

The young victim of an acid attack in Andhra Pradesh, whose perpetrators were killed in a controversial police encounter, died in Hyderabad on Wednesday after battling for life for over 20 days.

Swapnika, a final year engineering student in Warangal, breathed her last at around 05.30 hrs, doctors attending on her said.

She was put on ventilator support on Monday night and her condition worsened further with complications like multiple organ failure and high temperature, they said.

Describing Swapnika as a strong woman, a senior doctor who treated her said she sounded confident and was talking to her parents till she was put on ventilator despite having several complications.

“We counselled her parents before putting her on ventilator support. We told them that this could be the last time you are talking to your child.

“She was talking to her parents during the course of her treatment. She felt happy when told about the encounter of those who attacked her,” he said.

Weeping inconsolably, Swapnika’s parents hoped that a similar fate would not beckon others.

“We only hope that other parents would not have to suffer like this,” her father Devender said.

The girl’s body was taken to Warangal for final rites where a post-mortem was also conducted.

The body was kept at the Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science (KITS) and scores of students paid homage to Swapnika.
