MUMBAI, JANUARY 19: Viswanathan Anand, playing white, drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) in the fourth round of the $ 29,000 FIDE-Category-XVIII Corus Super Grandmaster Chess tournament at Wijk Ann Zee (Netherlands) on Wednesday, according to information reaching here.
Jeroen Piket (Netherlands) and Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) share top spot with three points followed by Anand, Alexander Morozevich (Russia), Peter Leko (Hungary) and Gary Kasparov (Russia) on 2.5 points each. Kasparov, however, was playing England’s Michael Adams when reports last came in.
On Tuesday, Anand thought he was lucky to have salvaged a half point from his game against Leko, a Petroff that took 27 moves. “My position was suspect,” said Anand after he had analysed the game.
According to Anand, “Black was on the point of collapse at the 15th move.” When Leko found a way out for Black even after the improved white continuation, Anand expressed his disgust with his own performce, saying: “I don’t deserve so much counterplay, not for the way I played today.”
