Wijk Aan Zee, Jan 30: Viswanathan Anand cut Garry Kasparov’s one-point lead by half with a dour win over Loek Van Wely in the 11th round of the 61st Hoogovens Chess Tournament here Friday evening.

Kasparov drew his match against Jan Timman to stay in the lead with 8.5 points. With two rounds yet to be played, the undefeated Anand (8) is in good position to at least tie for the title.

Vassily Kramnik is in third place with seven points.

Results (11th round): A Shirov (6) bt D Reinderman (2); J Piket (6) bt V Ivanchuk (5.5); I Sokolov (6) bt A Yermolinsky (3.5); J Timman (5) drew with G Kasparov (8.5); V Anand (8) bt Van Wely (4); P Svidler (6) drew with V Kramnik (7); R Kazimdzhanov (4) drew V Topalov (5.5). Needing a full point, Vijayalakshmi was a clear pawn up against BKreimann but played incorrectly and was forced to accept a draw.

Overnight leader GM Konstantin Landa of Russia clinched the title on the basis of a better tie-break score after being tied with Linares Open champion GM Alexei Dreev on 8.5 points. K Sasikiran (6.5) finished 10th in the tournament after beating Meherramzade in the last game.
