Mata Amritanandamayi Math has decided to set apart Rs 100 crore for tsunami relief. Addressing mediapersons at Vallickavu on Monday, Mata Amritanandamayi said the Math would be ready to reconstruct all the houses that had been razed across the state if the government permitted. The Math also proposes to build temporary shelters for those from Azheekkal, Srayikkad and Parayakadavu.

AITUC calls for truce

NEW DELHI: AITUC has announced it would not enter into any ‘‘war of words’’ with the UPA government for a month. It is a truce declared to ensure solidarity with the tsunami relief exercise. ‘‘We may have a number of serious differences with the Centre but we are not going to raise any of these issues in January because this is the month of solidarity,’’ said chief Gurudas Dasgupta on Monday.

Villages adopted

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh on Monday flew down to Chennai to review the rehabilitation work. He said his government would adopt two villages in the state. ‘‘Chhattisgarh government would carry out reconstruction of houses, hospitals, schools and community centres in each of these village with an amount of Rs 4 crore,’’ Raman told J. Jayalalitha. This amount is beside the Rs 7 crore package announced for the affected areas, he said.

NEW DELHI: A group of villagers of a Meghalayan village, hard-pressed for cash themselves, donated Rs 5 lakh for tsunami victims. Some residents of the Jaintiya Hill district who had met Union Minister P.R. Kyndiah on December 31 to put forth a demand of more funds were moved when Kyndiah told them of the devastation caused by the tsunami. The tribesmen collected Rs 5 lakh and handed it over to him.

HC auctions cakes

MADURAI: Two cakes that were brought to the Madurai Bench to celebrate the New Year were auctioned for Rs 2 lakh on Monday. The proceeds will go towards the tsunami relief fund.

Fuel supplies restored

NEW DELHI: Fuel supply to Andaman & Nicobar islands has been restored to normal and public sector oil firms have stocked 15-30 days supply of petrol, diesel, kerosene, ATF and LPG, govt said on Monday. —ENS & PTI
