
CHANDIGARH, May 13: The 74th amendment to the constitution has ensured continuity of office to municipal corporations as these bodies can not remain without elected representatives for more than six months. This was stated by Balramji Das Tandon, Minister of Local Self Government, Punjab.
He was speaking at a workshop on empowerment of city governments and urban infrastructure financing. The workshop was organised at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development CRRID in collaboration with National Institute of Urban Affairs NIUA, New Delhi.
Tandon said that the Punjab Government was contemplating to give more powers to the mayors of the municipal corporations and presidents of municipal councils to effectively deal with the administrative matters.
