Michael Bevan — a name that immediately brings to mind a number of Australian victories, specially in the one-day version — is here as part of the Indian Cricket League. He is the coach of the Chennai Superstars.
At the lobby of the team hotel, the Aussie waited for his team members to come down fro the day’s practice. He has a lot on the list — soccer, followed by fielding and nets and finally rugby in the evening. He took time out to speak to The Indian Express. Excerpts:
• Are you happy being a part of the ICL? What prompted you to join ICL and what are its prospects?
I am delighted to be part of the ICL. It is a lovely platform for the players to get together from all over the world and indulge in competitive cricket. The idea of cricket promotion prompted me to join ICL.
I feel ICL has rendered a great opportunity to all those players who have left cricket either due to injury or competition. And most importantly the youngsters will benefit a lot. Playing along with international players would be a good experience for them. Definitely, ICL is going to rock.
• What are your views on the Twenty20 format of the game?
Twenty20 is very entertaining and exciting. It has generated more participation and fan following. I feel it will get more popular with time. But it will never surpass Test cricket and the aura that surrounds it.
• You are entrusted with the job of coaching Chennai Superstars. Are you liking your job as coach?
I am enjoying my stint as a coach. We have played a few practice games in Delhi, and I managed it quite well.
• You played the role of a finisher in the Australian side so who according to you is your successor in the present Australian team?
I think Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke can be categorised as finishers in the Australian team. Both are very talented.
• The Indian team is in good form. After winning the One-day series against Pakistan, India won the first Test too. How will the forthcoming Indo-Aussie series be?
Indian team’s strength lies in their batting. I think the Australians need to bowl to a plan if they want to stop the Indians from dominating the proceedings.
•
Who will be the key players from Australia’s point of view?
The quick bowlers need to play crucial roles in bowling India out. Bowlers like McGrath and Warne will be missed, but the quick bowlers need to deliver the goods.
