It was a mixed dose of entertainment and achievements for the Indian Pharma industry. The Grand Hyatt Mumbai – the venue for the 4th Express Pharma Pulse Awards 2004 – was packed to the hilt on Friday night with the who’s who of the Indian pharmaceutical industry.

The event, constituted by the country’s first weekly for the pharmaceutical industry Express Pharma Pulse, honours those who bring excellence to life.

This year saw an addition to the 10 existing awards in the form of ‘The Excellence in Research’ award that recognises and encourages research, which has taken off among pharma companies in the country. The 11 awards were presented in two categories: The Overall Performance Category, comprising six awards, and the Special Category comprising five.

While the Lifetime Contribution award was conferred on Alkem Laboratories Chairman Samprada Singh, the Special Recognition award went to Wockhardt Ltd for its human insulin based on recombinant biotechnology.

The award for Excellence in Research went to Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd and the award for Best Export went to Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. The award for the Best Bulk Drug Company was jointly won by Aurobindo Pharma Ltd and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.

In the Overall Performance category, the winners were Ranbaxy Laboratories, Lupin Ltd, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Intas Pharma, Ind-Swift Ltd and Parental Drugs. Drug Controller General of India Ashwini Kumar was the chief guest at the glittering award ceremony.
