Mumbai, Sept 9: President K R Narayanan has constituted a high-level committee of Governors, headed by Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander, to examine the status of welfare programmes for the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes (SCs/STs) in different States of the country.

The first meeting of the Committee was held at Raj Bhavan on Friday under the chairmanship of Alexander. State Governors, including M M Jacob (Meghalaya), S S Kang (Kerala), V S Rama Devi (Karnataka), Suraj Bhan (Uttar Pradesh), M M Rajedran (Orissa) and Babu Parmanand (Haryana), attended the meeting.

The chief task before the committee was to examine if funds allocated for the development of the SCs/STs in different States were being utilised properly or not. Besides, the Committee has also been asked to examine the constraints in the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955.

The participating governors made brief presentations on the welfare programmes in their respective States. The meeting also decided to seek more information on the status of these laws in all the States. Accordingly, a questionnaire would be sent to all the States to get the information on the status of welfare programmes for the SCs/STs.
