An Accused in the murder of former law minister Aladi Aruna died while in police custody early on Thursday.

Tirunelveli DIG K. Gopalakrishnan said ‘Auto’ Bhaskar had complained of giddiness and sought permission to go to the bathroom. He fainted soon after coming out and was rushed to the Cheranmahadevi Government Hospital where he died.

Bhaskar’s body was sent to the Ambasamudram Government Hospital for post-mortem. The Cheranmahadevi RDO, Anbazhagan, after initial inquiry had stated that there were no external injuries on the body. However, Bhaskar reportedly suffered head injuries in a clash some time back.

A special police team investigating Aladi’s murder had arrested D. Azhagar from Palani. Based on information given by him, the team later arrested Bhaskar, his friends Ravi and P. Kannan near Dindigul. Kannan is said to have given Bhaskar and Ravi shelter.

The four were later taken to Tirunelveli. On the way, they allegedly confessed that Benny alias Benedict of Maravankudyiruppu in Kanyakumari district, Bhaskar and Azhagar were involved in the actual killing while others — who surrendered in a Chennai court — had stalked Aladi before the murder. They also named Velthurai, who is still at large, as the mastermind.
