Former Army officer Lt Gen Ajai Singh will take over as the next Governor of Assam on Thursday. He takes over from Lt Gen (retd) S.K. Sinha, who has been shifted to Jammu and Kashmir.
The first Army operation against the ULFA — Operation Bajrang — was launched under Singh in November 1990. He was then GOC of the Army’s Four Corps at Tezpur.
The appointment of another former Army officer as Assam Governor comes close on the heels of the North East Study Group attached to the Home Ministry stating that no more retired Army or police officers should be sent on gubernatorial assignments to the region because they convey a ‘‘wrong signal.’’ The study group comprised K.P.S. Gill and Lt General (retd) S.K. Pillai among other.
Interestingly, four states in the North-East have former Army or police officers as Governors right now.
