To increase accountability of schools receiving grant-in-aid from the Karnataka government, the state Education Department has pulled up schools for not maintaining a minimum classroom strength.

The department has decided to cut salaries of teachers working in aided Kannada medium primary schools where attendance is below 80 per cent. The order means if there are 50 students in a class, 40 must attend on any given day.

If attendance goes below this, teachers’ salaries are liable to be cut.
