NEW DELHI, March 15: The alleged attack on an auditor by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalitha and two others today rocked the Lok Sabha, with the AIADMK accusing Tamil Nadu chief minister N Karunanidhi of foisting cases against her and its members staging a walk out protesting the Chair’s refusal to raise the issue.

Seeking to raise the issue during the zero hour, AIADMK group leader R Muthiah said the Tamil Nadu Government was following a policy of vendetta against political rivals and asked the Centre not to remain a mere spectator. He demanded the Government conduct an inquiry into the matter and seek a report from the State Government.

Speaker G M C Balayogi observed it was a law and order issue and a State subject, and that Muthiah should not “dilate on the matter” he had already raised.

There were heated exchanges between the AIADMK member and some Opposition members. Communist Party of India (Marxist) member Suresh Kurup objected to the raising of a State subjectwhile DMK member T R Balu said the alleged attack on Jayalalitha’s auditor at her residence was nothing new and that a year ago, a former State chief secretary had been beaten up under suspicious circumstances.

As some AIADMK MPs rushed to the well of the House, the Speaker repeatedly asked Muthiah to take his seat, provoking him to stage a walkout.

Opposition members questioned the participation of AIADMK nominee and Revenue Minister M R Janarthanan in the walkout.

But with the Minister’s immediate return, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee remarked that he had not joined the walkout.
