The Agni-I missile, capable of hitting targets up to 900 km, was successfully test-fired today at the coastal Chandipur missile test centre in Orissa.
The surface-to-surface Agni missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher a year after it’s maiden test flight in January last year. Sources say the missile is slated to be operated from launchers on rails as well as road.
The missile will undergo seven more developmental tests before it goes for user trials, and if successful, be inducted into service.
Defence sources termed the flight as a ‘‘smooth textbook launch’’ adding that more tests will be conducted in the coming weeks.
The test of the nuclear capable 15-metre tall 12-tonne missile comes a week after the Cabinet Committee on Security announced the formal Nuclear Command Authority and placed nuclear assets under the Strategic Forces Command.
Union Defence Minister George Fernandes witnessed the test along with his scientific advisor Dr V.K. Aatre and the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Pankaj Joshi and Deputy Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. J.B.S. Yadava. The Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile, the Brahmos is also likely to be test fired soon, sources said.
