Even as the controversy surrounding the Hogenakkal project subsided, one more issue has cropped up with the state PWD Minister Durai Murugan assuring the Assembly that Tamil Nadu’s interest in Palar river would be safeguarded.

In his reply to PMK president GK Mani in the Assembly on Monday, Murugan said the state would take all possible steps to prevent Andhra Pradesh from building a check dam across the river. The Supreme Court has given directions to the Centre to arrange talks between the two states, he said, adding that Tamil Nadu would take all measures to prevent the construction of the dam.

Meanwhile, Speaker R Avudiappan referred a privilege issue against AIADMK whip and former minister K A Sengottaiyan to the Privileges Committee for raising an issue outside the Assembly when the House was in session. Murugan said the member could have commented on the issue inside the House, but instead they went to the media.
