Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has called for the setting up of a federal police force to combat ‘‘well-defined federal crimes’’ like terrorism and insurgency. This is the second time Advani has mooted the idea for the creation of a federal police.
Speaking at the India Today Chief Ministers’ Conclave here, Advani sought to allay the fears of the states by making it clear that the proposed force ‘‘will not detract power from any state.’’ He reassured them that ‘‘it will help all states in giving better security to their citizens.’’
Advani pointed out that crimes related to terrorism and insurgency were not restricted to one state. ‘‘We urgently need to set up a federal police force to deal with well-defined federal crimes.’’
The function was attennded by Chief Ministers N. Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh), Rabri Devi (Bihar), Narendra Modi (Gujarat) and Manohar Parrikar (Goa). Goa was adjudged best state in the over-all category.
However, Rabri Devi, angry after Bihar was slotted the most backward state, walked out of the function. She said that she would not tolerate the wrong projection of Bihar as the most backward state. RJD president Laloo Prasad Yadav joined her and threatened to burn copies of the magazine. The organisers, however, managed to persuade Laloo to stay on so that he could address the conclave.
