Praying for the long life of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on her 55th birthday today, an AIADMK functionary in Vellore severed his small finger in the right hand and offered it at the local Ayyappan temple.

Gunasekaran, who has been working as the AIADMK’s secretary of the Jadayanur unit, even refused to reveal the whereabouts of his finger. After much persuasion, he told police that he had deposited the finger with vibuthi (sacred ash) at the hundi in the temple.

Jayalalithaa ordered that Gunasekaran be immediately taken to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai and treated. The entire medical expenditure would be met by the AIADMK, party sources said.

While aboard INS Vikrant, the Prime Minister had a packed schedule of engagements, officials said.
