PUNE, April 26: When the entrance gate of the approach road to Ashiyana society at Baner was dismantled by a group of goons last night, little did the residents of society know that all their efforts to seek police assistance would in turn prove out to be a nightmarish experience.
The residents, hoping some swift action from the police quarters, were aghast when the Assistance Commissioner of Police, Khadki section D S Tompe allegedly told them point blank that it would be in their own interests if they dismantled the gate themselves or else he would arrest them and have the gate dismantled using the police force.
The incident occurred around Saturday midnight when a group of about 50 hooligans arrived in a tempo at the society and smashed the gate using gas cutters.
Stunned by this the local residents immediately contacted the police control room over telephone and the mobile police van arrived on the spot. But by this time the goons had already fled the scene after doing their work.
While the residents were giving the information of the incidence to the police, police inspector Vilas Jadhav of Chatuhshringi police station arrived at the spot and describing the incidence as a regular feature asked the residents to leave. At this time ACP Tompe also arrived at the spot and was detailed about the incident by the residents.
The residents were surprised to discover that Tompe who so far gave a patient listening to them all of a sudden changed his stance after holding some discussions with Jadhav and in turn threatened to arrest them.
He allegedly told the residents that complaint of only one resident would be registered and the gate would be dismantled if it was installed again in future.
Said Dr M S Jadhav, a resident of the society, “inspector Jadhav also categorically ordered us to remove the gate and allow the same to be used by a builder in the locality.” The residents suspect the role of builder in this episode.
According to the residents, Ashok Murkute, a builder who is constructing a housing complex behind the society, frequently uses their private approach road for his work. In order to stop the use of their private road by Murkute, the residents had installed the iron gate at both ends. However, the residents say that on earlier two occasions also the gate was dismantled by the builder using goons for the purpose. When opposed, the goons had even resorted to stone-pelting earlier, the residents said. The residents have lodged the complaint with Chatuhshrungi police station.
