Nearly five months after the Sabarmati train carnage, investigators claim to have arrested the three accused who were reportedly part of the ‘core’ team that set fire to the S6 coach.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), CID, Crime, Rakesh Asthana confirmed that during interrogation, the trio had admitted setting the coach on fire. ‘‘They were part of the team which set the coach on fire. We are looking for more of their accomplices,’’ Asthana told The Indian Express.

Sources said sleuths from Railway police and CID Crime nabbed the three accused from the Singal Falia area of Godhra a few days back. Identified as Mehmood Yaqoob Bhopa, Hasssan Ahmed Lala and Ramzan Bin Yamin, the accused, are said to have been hiding in a house in the interiors of the locality when they were nabbed on Wednesday.

DIG Asthana, however, refused to divulge the links between the three accused and the two other prime accused, Haji Bilal and Mohammed Hussain Kalota. ‘‘We are working on establishing the links and disclosing information could hamper the investigation,’’ said Asthana.

Reportedly the three accused worked for an absconding tea vendor and notorious criminal Razzaq Kurkur who is alleged to have played a crucial role in the ‘core’ team. Though officials say they have almost cracked the case, sources say the investigators are treading cautiously as there were still some missing links in the case.

‘‘Though some links are still to be found, we have almost established the conspiracy angle in the case,’’ said a senior police officer.
