Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra are talking figures. But this time, it’s not the box office that has the veteran directors occupied. Mumbai’s floods didn’t spare Bollywood moghuls either.
Ghai lost equipment worth Rs 10 crore when his Audeus studio in Andheri was flooded. ‘‘We’ve lost state-of-the-art edit and recording machines. Audeus is a Rs 35-crore post-production house and you can imagine the extent of damage when I say we have suffered reverses of Rs 10 crore,’’ he says.
The rains spoilt the basement and ground floor of Chopra’s Juhu bungalow that housed antique furniture, Persian carpets and rare paintings.
But what hurts the most is the damage to the seven cars. ‘‘All our cars have gone, including a Mercedes and BMW,’’ says Chopra.
It’s been five days and the power has still not been restored in the Chopra household. External electric lines are wired into the house and a generator van, borrowed from his sets.
The scene outside Shatrughan Sinha’s Juhu residence—49 A, Ramayan—is also not pleasant. There’s ankle-deep water, the furniture upholstery is laid out to dry and the living room sofa is propped up on stools.
‘‘The minute the water level started rising, the entire family left for their other house. There’s a lot of damage and they have just returned to get things in order,’’ says Sinha’s PA S K Jha.
Anupam Kher’s acting school in Andheri has lost a camera set-up and beta machines. ‘‘It’s not just the equipment but the rare posters and pictures that I miss the most. I’d collected rare books over 35 years and they are all gone,’’ says Kher.
Amitabh Bachchan is also going through the same trauma. The basements in both his Juhu houses, Prateeksha and Jalsa, are damaged, and Bachchan has lost letters written by father Harivanshrai, his movie posters and movie collection.
Music composer Bappi Lahiri has lost three pianos, high-end keyboards and 20 platinum and gold discs.
‘‘But what’s painful is that my puja room, where I composed music for 23 years, is destroyed,’’ he says.
The rains also hit Dharmendra’s ground-floor office, wife Hema Malini’s bungalow and Jeetendra’s palatial Juhu bungalow.
