Dorjee Khandu, who was born on March 19, 1955, is a state politics veteran. He first entered public life in 1980 as an Anchalik Samiti Member of Tawang. A Class VIII dropout, Khandu is a Buddhist from Tawang. He served in the army intelligence for seven years and was given a gold medal for meritorious service during the Bangladesh War. Khandu remained in district-level politics for over a decade until he was elected unopposed to the state Assembly for the first time in 1990 from the Mukto-Thingbu segment.
