Sunday dawned as a lucky day in the life of former PoW Lance Naik Jagsir Singh. Unlike the media din that surrounded the reunion of colleague Arif with his wife Gudiya, Jagsir reunited with his wife in the presence of close family members yesterday.

He had not wished to make his reunion public. ‘‘I am thankful to God for having put my family together once again,’’ he said today.

There was nothing dramatic about the reunion. Sunday morning brought home his wife Jaswinder Kaur, who apologised to her two brothers — Gurmail Singh and Gurvinder Singh — for whatever had happened in the past. Jaswinder Kaur had moved into her brothers’ house in Muktsar apparently due to family differences that had cropped up during Jagsir’s absence, while he was in Pakistan jails.

Yesterday, however, all was forgotten and forgiven. It was a day for smiles all around. Muktsar Municipal Councillor Jasraj Dua, who had played a part in bringing the family together, was ‘‘happy that the girl got back her home, with honour.’’ Dua was the one who had suggested to Jaswinder’s brothers that they leave her with her in-laws.

The brothers were glad that they had done so. Gurmail, brother-in-law of Jagsir, said: ‘‘Having seen off our sister once again to her in-laws makes us happy.’’

As for Jagsir, he was on cloud nine. ‘‘I feel complete today. I have my family back as I had left it,’’ he said.

His wife told The Indian Express that she had been ‘‘longing to be with Jagsir ever since he returned, and God has heard my prayers only now.’’ Jaswinder was also happy since she reunited with her daughter Kuldeep (5) as well, who had been living with her grandmother Chhoto Kaur since the last four years.

‘‘We are happy to see them together, finally,’’ say Jagsir’s relatives. His mother, Chhoto Kaur, adds: ‘‘I am happy as little Kuldeep has got back her father as well as her mother.’’

Jagsir and Sapper Arif Mohammad returned to India after their release from Pakistan on August 9.
