NEW DELHI, February 8: Ajay Sharma, who missed Delhi’s Ranji Trophy Super League match against Mahashtra at Pune, is expected to be back to lead the team against Tamil Nadu, starting at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Sunday.
The former India batsman was named to lead Delhi in the Super League matches, replacing wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya who had led the team in the league phase. However, Ajay Sharma did not join the team at Pune (the match ended in a draw today) as he underwent a lazer eye operation on February 2. Dahiya, named deputy to Ajay, also could not play in the match as his finger injury hadn’t healed. In their absence, Delhi team was led by India international Nikhil Chopra.
“I couldn’t have played the match against Maharashtra as the doctor who operated my eye advised me a week’s rest. I had informed the DDCA sports secretary accordingly,” Ajay said.
On the eve of the match against Maharashtra, Delhi manager Rakesh Shukla had told reporters that Ajay had informed him of reaching Pune by air. “However, I could’t leave Delhi against the doctor’s advice,” Ajay said. Both Ajay Sharma and Vijay Dahiya had pulled out of the Deodhar Trophy midway citing eye problem and finger injury, respectively.
After the game against Tamil Nadu, Delhi are scheduled to play the Railways (March 4-7) in Delhi and Orissa at Cuttack (March 13-16). Having conceded first innings lead to Maharashtra, Delhi face an uphill task in the remaining games to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Although Delhi were shot out for a paltry 156 in the first innings against Maharashtra, they came back strongly in the second through centuries from wicketkeeper-opening batsman Devender Sharma and Akash Malhotra. The return of Ajay and Dahiya for the match against Tamil Nadu should bolster the team’s chances next week.
