HISAR, Sept 3: About 90 per cent of drinking water in Hisar and Hansi was found to be contaminated with cohliform bacteria which cause liver and abdominal diseases.

Out of the 33 tests conducted by officials of the Health Department at various drinking supply points in both towns in August, reports of 16 samples was available with the authorities. At least 13 of these were suspected to be carrying bacterial infectants.

According to official sources, samples were also collected from boosting stations and pumps being maintained by state departments and agencies, including HUDA. Of the 33 samples, 22 were taken from Hisar and the rest were collected from Hansi.

A senior doctor at the Civil Hospital, on condition of anonymity, holds the district health authorities solely responsible for this serious lapse.

“It’s like playing with the lives of people,” he said. “At least 116 water samples were found to contain one or the other kind of bacteria out of a total 133 collected during the last eight months.”

“This is the state of affairs despite the fact that the Health Minister of the state represents Hisar assembly constituency,” another doctor said.

Civil Surgeon S. K. Dogra, confirmed bacterial contamination in drinking water supply but said there was no need to panic because the department has already taken adequate steps to super-chlorify water tanks and tubewells in both sub-divisions.

He said that except for sporadic cases of water-borne diseases, the situation was well under control.

Areas where the drinking water was found polluted in Hisar include the posh locality of Sector 15, besides Model Town, Bus Stand and Jawahar Nagar. In Hansi, the grain market, Gandhi Nagar, Delhi Gate and Multan Nagar had contaminated water.
