AMRITSAR, Nov 17: More than 70 per cent permanent account numbers (PAN) would be issued by March 31 next year, according to S.J.S. Pall, the Commissioner, Income Tax, Amritsar.

He said of the more than 2.15 lakh applications received for PAN, the department had issued PAN to nearly 48,000 applicants. He said the scheme would help widen the tax base in the country.

Later, while inaugurating the regional-level competition for the selection of a team for the cultural meet of the Central Revenue Northern Zone, Pall appealed the public to wipe out black money from the market by co-operating with the government.

More than a hundred participants from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir took part in the competition.
