Six jail and police personnel, including incharge of Cantt police station, Ram Nagina Yadav, were suspended late last night in connection with killing of Samajwadi Party corporator Banshi Yadav, police sources said here today.

Deputy jailor Arvind Srivastava and a bandi rakshak (jail guard) have also been taken into custody for interrogation, sources said. Yadav, was killed in jail premises yesterday morning by unidentified men. Soon after the incident, an immediate inspection revealed that inmates had free access to cellphones and other facilities

Two separate complaints have already been lodged in this connection against six unidentified persons and against Srivastava, and ‘‘mafia don’’ Anurag Tripathi alias Annu, Mayank Tripathi and Ramesh Yadav.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Himanshu Kumar admitted the incident took place due to connivance between jail staff and criminals.

Stern action would be taken against those responsible, he assured. Subhash Chabdra, SSP, Varanasi, termed the incident ‘‘a result of a gang war’’.

The ADM (city) has been deputed by the district magistrate to inquire into the episode, sources said.
