Five Indian nationals — all Sikhs — were arrested after they apparently attempted to stow away to London by hiding in the ceiling of a Bangladesh passenger jet, officials said on Sunday.

Cleaners discovered the Indians on Saturday, nearly 16 hours after a state-run Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane landed in Dhaka’s Zia International Airport from Hong Kong, Junior Civil Aviation Minister Mir Nasiruddin said.

The Indians, aged between 25 and 30, were found hiding in the ceiling of the DC-10 aircraft, the Minister said.

They were discovered after a shoe dropped from the ceiling of a washroom being cleaned.

After looking up, the aircraft maintenance staff discovered a large hole where the men had crawled into.

The five men carried passports and had purchased tickets for the flight from Hong Kong to Dhaka, a police investigator said on condition of anonymity.

He quoted the men as saying they were hiding with the intention of flying on to London. Police did not immediately say what charges the stowaways faced. —(PTI)
