At least 31 people were killed and 29 injured, six of them severely, when the bus they were travelling in fell down a 70-feet gorge at Koldi Barman near Udhampur this morning.
Sources said the accident occurred around 11.30 am when the bus, on its way from Ghordi to Udhampur, skidded off the road and headed for the gorge. The driver, while negotiating a curve, is said to have lost control which took the vehicle down the nullah.
Passersby and villagers rushed to the spot and rescued the injured from the bus. A police rescue party reached within minutes and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.
Sources said 28 people died on the spot while one of the injured died on the way to hospital. The condition of six of the passengers is said to be critical. They were later taken to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu.
Doda-Udhampur DIG Satvir Gupta said a rescue party had been sent as soon as information was received. ‘‘Two cranes were also pressed into service to ascertain whether the bodies are buried under the bus,’’ he added.
