At least 26 passengers were killed and 18 injured when an overloaded bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Jadrola in Poonch district. Three days ago on the same route, a bus had rolled down a gorge near Bracher killing 32 people, including seven policemen.
Sources say, the accident took place this afternoon when the driver of the bus, on its way from Poonch to Pindi, lost control over the vehicle near Pindi and it fell into a 200-ft deep gorge near Mandi.
Police suspect overloading as the main reason behind the accident. More than 65 passengers were booked in a bus having a capacity of 35.
Some passers-by began rescue work at once and were later joined by police and Army personnel. They had to use ropes to go deep into the gorge to rescue the injured and shift them to nearby hospitals in Mandi and Poonch. Some of the critically injured were referred to the Government Medical College, Hospital, Jammu.
