The 2006 Asian Games will be as good as this year’s version in Busan, except they will come with an added “Doha flavour,” says a top official from Qatar. Abdulla AR Buhmaid, the director-general of the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee, also dismissed critics who say that Doha is behind schedule in preparations. “That’s absolutely not true. We are committed to deliver the Games on time,” he said today. He said work is going at a brisk pace and all facilities will be ready in three years with one year spare for testing. Buhmaid is in Busan with about 50 officials to see the facilities and organisation of the ongoing Games.

Night long celebrations

At the end of gruelling competitions most athletes might want to dive into the bed. But for those who still want to shake a leg, the Asian Games Village offers a discotheque in the basement of a recreation centre. The basement reverberates to music at a dance party every night with a bonus for athletes celebrating their birthday during the two weeks at the Games, according to Busan Asiad, the Games newsletter. It said the parties are sponsored by Korean Air, the official airline of the Games. Invitations are sent out to all athletes and those who show up have a chance of winning door prices including air tickets to Bangkok and other Asian vacation destinations.
