Two persons were killed and 28 injured when the engine and five bogies of the Chittorgarh-Mhow train derailed near here today. Those dead are Ramlal Meena and Ramesh Giri of Allahabad, an official said, adding that 22 of the injured have been admitted to the civil hospital, and six to the railway hospital.
One injured at railway hospital and two at the civil hospital are critical, the spokesman said, adding several others sustained minor injuries and were given primary treatment.
District Collector Dipti Gaud Mukherjee said 13 persons were given primary treatment and 16 had critical injuries.
The cause of the derailment of the train, which started as a holiday express and was later used for regular traffic, is being investigated, railway officials said. A medical relief train has been dispatched from Indore to assist in rescue and relief work which was on in full swing.
Traffic was paralysed on the Ajmer-Khandwa section, the spokesman said. The tracks are expected to be cleared by late evening.
