JAMMU/SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 16: Two Armymen and an SPO were among nine people killed on the 19th day of ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir.

The soldiers were killed and four others injured when a fidayeen (suicide) squad of the Lashker-e-Toiba attacked an Army camp in Mendhar town of Poonch district during the wee hours today. The militants escaped under the cover of darkness.

Sources said the squad tried to sneak into the 190 Artillery camp attached with the 194 Artillery Company. While one member engaged the sentries at the main gate, the others tried to sneak in. Both the sentries died on the spot. Troops rushed to the site after hearing the gun shots, but the militants escaped. This is the first ever militant attack on an Army camp in Mendhar town.

Militants killed two villagers at Zinhal-Banihal and Ashar-Banihal in Doda district last night. The deceased have been identified as Sonaullah Wani and Mohammad Ishaq. Police said unidentified gunmen shot dead one Rashid Ahmad in Kote Chadwal village in Budhal area of Rajouri district.

Militants attacked a BSF post in Tryath village in Rajouri. When the soldiers retaliated, the insurgents fled, leaving behind a bag containing an AK magazine, 30 rounds of Kalashnikov, two hand-grenades and a rifle grenade.

Meanwhile, four persons including an SPO and an army informer were killed across the Kashmir Valley since yesterday. Militants shot at and injured Mohammad Kamal Dar of Beerwah at Magam. Dar was moved to the Srinagar hospital where he died. He was working with the 24 Rashtriya Rifles.

An SPO was killed after his colleague accidentally shot at him in Aloosa, Bandipora. Sources identified the slain as Fayaz Ahmad Mir. Both had reportedly gone to the house of one Abdul Ghani Patwari in the area and allegedly intimidated him to give money.

An altercation followed, with Feroz making an attempt to open fire at Ghani’s son. Both the SPOs were working with the local Army unit. Army sources, however, said that the two had deserted the camp 15 days ago.

Militants fired rockets on the 15 RR camp at Bandipora. Two of the barracks were slightly damaged. No one was injured. One person who was injured in the grenade attack at Airwani succumbed to his injuries today. He has been identified as Ghulam Mohammad Bhat.
