NEW DELHI, June 8: The police claim to have arrested the man who shot a Daryaganj property dealer, Satish Kohli, on May 20. The suspect has been identified as Pankaj alias Mian. The 19-year-old youth had allegedly been given the supari to kill Kohli, the central district police chief Ajay Kashyap said on Monday.

Kohli was the president of the Daryaganj trader’s union and a Congress Party member. An unidentified assailant had shot Kohli from point-blank range as soon as he left office in the evening on that fateful day. Kohli died on the spot.

According to the police, the conspiracy to kill Kohli was hatched at Tihar jail by three undertrial — Mohar Singh, Jai Chand and Brij Mohan, all brothers — against whom Kohli had deposed in a land grabbing case involving the property of a Daryaganj doctor. The murder, according to the police, was carefully planned out in the chamber of a Tis Hazari lawyer who is the brother of the three conspirators. The lawyer has not yet been arrested.

In order to avoid direct involvement in the case, the three hired their neighbour, Pankaj, for the job. Meanwhile, Brij Mohan who was on interim bail in a murder case went into judicial custody a week before Kohli’s murder by surrendering before the court in some other case, the district police chief said.

The other accused Jai Chand who was granted bail by the Delhi High Court did not furnish any surety and thus remained in jail. They promised Pankaj Rs 5 lakh and a Maruti van as supari. He was also provided with a 9 mm pistol.

According to the police, Pankaj’s escape after the murder was facilitated by another brother of the accused who provided a Maruti van.

On interrogation, Pankaj confessed his involvement in the conspiracy and the commission of the offence. He has been remanded to police custody till June 11. The van used in the crime which was abandoned in front of St Stephens hospital has been seized. The police are conducting further investigations.
