Trouble erupted in the city’s Mehboobganj area this afternoon following the death of a 16-year-old girl, Praveen, who was reportedly stoned to death by a group of miscreants in the Dhobi Gali locality. The death sparked off civic unrest in the area, as a mob of locals set fire to a liquor shop and a house. The house belonged to one of the suspects. In a quick response, the administration suspended Ambarganj outpost in-charge R S Yadav.Trouble began when a group of miscreants reportedly dragged Praveen from a rickshaw and started hitting her with stones. The girl died on the spot. Her mother, Sauraia, too sustained injuries. The criminals escaped without any resistance.‘‘We were on our way home after purchasing medicines from Thakurganj. A group of miscreants intercepted our rickshaw soon after we reached the Dhobi Gali Mor. They hit my daughter with stones. Despite my cries, nobody came to rescue my daughter,’’ said Sauraia. Asked if she had any enmity with the attackers, she replied: ‘‘Mera koi dushmani kisi se nahin hai.’’But locals said that Praveen’s family members had recently exchanged some heated words with the attackers while trying to stop them from consuming heroin, smack and liquor near their house.
