MUMBAI, February 10: A 14-year-old schoolboy was killed when the scooter he was riding pillion on was hit by a speeding dumper at Deonar this morning. His father, who was riding the scooter, broke his hand, while his sister escaped unscathed.

The three were on their way to the Swami Vivekanand High School at Kurla where the deceased 14-year-old Hussain Abid Ali and his sister 10-year-old Shakila studied. The over 20-minutes ride to the school on their father Abid Ali Gulamali Maxiwalla’s black Kinetic Honda was a daily affair.

The collision took place opposite Dassa Container Yard on the busy Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road in north-east Mumbai at around 11.45 am.

Investigating officer PSI A Kambli said the scooter was hit from behind by the vehicle.

Hussain, who was thrown off the scooter fell on the road and was crushed under the truck’s tyres. He died on the spot. Shakila and Abid Ali fell away from the road. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where the boy was declared dead on admission.

VijayShivram Mamudkar, the driver of the truck has been arrested and has been charged with reckless driving, Deonar police said.

Neighbours of the Maxiwalla family at Baiganwadi, Shivaji Nagar, were shocked to learn of the tragedy. The Ghatkopar-Mankhurd link road is a dangerous stretch because of the heavy traffic on the road at all hours of the day.
