1,000 child marriages solemnised

In a complete defiance of orders, at least 1,000 child marriages were solemnised in the tribal districts of Chhattisgarh today.

Reports about child marriages on Akshy-Tritya, which falls on this day, have also been received from the districts of Durg, Bilaspur, Raipur, Dhamtari and Rajnandgaon. The Forum for Fact-finding Documentation and Advisory, however, claimed that some 15,000 child marriages had been solemnised in recent months.

Special secretary to the Department of Women and Child Development, Babu Lal Aggarwal, said a detailed report on this would only be available tomorrow.
