Saudi police today continued their hunt for suspects in the strikes on the kingdom’s security apparatus last night, that killed 10 militants and one bystander.
Militants launched coordinated car bombings and battled security forces in the Saudi Capital in attacks last night that caused oil prices to jump and signalled that Islamic extremists are still capable of launching attacks, despite the kingdom’s crackdown on Al Qaeda.
More than 90 people, mostly security forces and bystanders, were injured in the attacks, reported the Al Riyadh daily, a state-controlled newspaper. Two of the militants killed were among the most-wanted extremists in Saudi Arabia.
Brig. Gen. Mansour al-Turki, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, told the Al Riyadh Daily that the two attacks were ‘‘suicide bombings’.’A statement from the ministry statement blamed the assaults on a ‘‘deviant group’’ — a term the government has used to describe Al Qaeda. —AP/PTI
