Tara Sutaria on mental health, fitness, and food: ‘Of course, low phases affect you’

You may not spot her being papped often, but whenever she steps out — whether for an event, a quiet dinner, or on the ramp — Tara Sutaria makes heads turn. The actor, who made her debut in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, has since featured in Tadap, Heropanti 2, and Ek Villain Returns. Ask her if this was always the plan, and she replies instantly, “There was never really a Plan B.”

In an exclusive interview with indianexpress.com, Tara opens up about her journey, the highs and lows of being an actor, her diet, fitness, love for snacks, and more.

Q. From 2019 to 2025, how do you describe your journey in the film industry?

Tara Sutaria: It’s been a journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery. Every year has taught me something new about myself and the craft.

Q. Did you always want to become an actor, or did you have a plan B?

Tara Sutaria: I always wanted to perform — whether it was singing, dancing, or acting. There was never really a Plan B.

Q. The industry can be unpredictable. Have low phases affected your mental health?

Tara Sutaria: Of course, low phases affect you. But I’ve learned to centre myself; spending time with family, music, and my dogs helps me stay grounded.

Q. What about physical health — what does your fitness routine include?

Tara Sutaria: I love Pilates and dancing. They keep me strong and happy, both physically and mentally.

Q. You travel often for work. Which is the most beautiful place you’ve visited?

Tara Sutaria: Italy — every corner feels like art and romance come alive.

Q. What’s on your travel wish list?

Tara Sutaria: Japan! I’m fascinated by its culture, design, and discipline.

Q. Your skin and hair always look flawless. What’s your secret?

Tara Sutaria: Nothing magical. I keep things simple — good sleep, hydration, and minimal products.

Q. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Tara Sutaria: I start with gratitude, some quiet time, and herbal tea before my workout.

Q. Are you particular about what you eat? What does your daily diet look like?

Tara Sutaria: I enjoy food, so I eat everything in moderation. My day usually includes fresh fruits, homemade meals, and lots of water.

Q. What’s your biggest snacking weakness?

Tara Sutaria: I do have a major weakness for snacks. I usually reach for something in the late afternoon or evening. Lately, I’ve been loving Red Rock Deli chips — they’re such a fun indulgence when I’m craving a flavourful gourmet experience. The ingredients — olives, sundried tomatoes, parmesan — are irresistible!

Q. Any wellness practices you swear by?

Tara Sutaria: Consistency, good sleep, and listening to your body.

Q. One thing people don’t know about you?

Tara Sutaria: I’m quite a homebody, happiest when I’m cooking or playing music.
