In a world obsessed with miracle creams and ten-step routines, Priyanka Chopra Jonas brings us back to basics with something deeply nostalgic and beautifully rooted: the wisdom of our grandmothers.

In a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, the global star opened up about the women (and men!) who shaped her approach to self-care and beauty. “I grew up with a lot of strong women—my mom, my grandmother—and my dad, actually. He liked to take care of himself and had all his products,” Priyanka shared. “So I grew up around people who were into self-care.”

But it wasn’t until later in life that she began to appreciate the value of these rituals truly. “You take your youth for granted,” she admitted, reflecting on the quiet confidence that comes with age—and the habits that help you carry it gracefully.

The secret? It was always in the kitchen

Growing up in India, Priyanka was surrounded by DIY beauty traditions that went beyond vanity. “My mom made exfoliating mixes—called ubtan—made from flour, turmeric, yoghurt. I still use that on my body,” she said. These handmade scrubs weren’t just effective; they were nourishing—made with love and passed down through generations.

For her grandmother, beauty wasn’t in jars or tubes—it came in a bottle of coconut oil. “She lived on coconut oil—put it all over her body. She passed at 94 with barely three wrinkles,” Priyanka revealed. The simplicity of this routine—and its astonishing results—are enough to make anyone reconsider what real skincare looks like.

According to Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and founder of Dr. Shareefa Skin Care Clinic in Mumbai, while ingredients like turmeric and yogurt have benefits, they aren’t for everyone. “People with sensitive skin can experience irritation, redness, or rashes when using turmeric,” she cautioned. “Especially those with eczema or rosacea need to be very cautious.”

Likewise, Dr Shikha Khare, a consultant dermatologist at Yatharth Hospitals, warned against excessive scrubbing. “Aggressive exfoliation, especially on sensitive skin, can lead to redness, itching, even pigmentation and scarring,” she explained. “If the skin barrier is compromised, it can also lead to photosensitivity and inflammation.”
