Priya Dutt Roncon, former Member of Parliament and actor Sanjay Dutt’s sister, recently opened up about her brother’s lung cancer diagnosis in 2020, and how it was a shocking revelation for him and the entire family. “I believe that your problems always seem too much till the time you see somebody else’s problems. With god’s grace, we have been able to come out stronger. Hua hai problem, but we have seen the worst and we have seen the best as well. (Yes, problems have happened, but we have been able to come through). He is a resilient person. He is the kind of guy who takes whatever in his stride. You can’t pin him down for too long. He will always get up and come back,” shared Priya, 58.

Recalling the time of the diagnosis as “crazy,” she said: “His career had taken off again, and he was getting good movies. And suddenly…then decisions happened. He went through everything. He was very strong through it all. It was lung cancer. He fought it. We have excellent doctors here. Everybody said America lekar jayenge…we got the best here. What we have here…why would you go sit there (US) alone? You don’t know anyone there. It was the COVID-19 time. It will be worse for him. Here at least, we know people, we all are there.”

She also mentioned that the family’s strength lies in its ability to stick together in times of adversity. “We give each other space, but the moment there is a problem, we all rally together. That is something which is really important for us,” shared Priya.

On Sanjay’s reaction, Priya said, “He was shaken up. But once he came to terms with it, he realised you have to attack it. His treatment started immediately.”

She detailed that he was particular about not being treated as a patient at home and held the willpower to fight battles like these, further sharing that he ensured to work out daily.

“He said, I am going to work out every day. He used to come from his chemotherapy and workout. The doctor had shared that if your body allows it, then do. He had his exercise bike, and so he did it. He had amazing willpower. I really admire him. He doesn’t let anything bring him down. He may have his good, bad days, but he snaps out of it. There is no ill will in his heart for anybody. Sometimes, people become bitter. He will always tell me that whatever is in the destiny, it will happen. So, don’t stress. Sometimes I wonder when I sit with him, what makes him tick?”

Indeed, a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for the family, such that it can feel like a sudden storm, said Dr Gaurav Jaswal, senior consultant and radiation oncologist at Onco Life Cancer Centre, Talegaon. “It can cause shock, fear, anger, panic, frustration, agitation, and confusion all at once. In that moment, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, but educating oneself regarding the type of cancer will help to make informed choices,” said Dr Jaswal.

It is essential to understand the type, stage, and treatment options for the cancer.

“It’s important to write down questions, take notes during doctor visits, and bring a trusted friend or family member for support. Seeking a second opinion can also provide clarity regarding the diagnosis, stage, and further course of treatment. Emotionally, it’s okay to grieve and seek support through counselling, join a support group, and speak to other survivors. Physically and mentally preparing for treatment is also necessary,” said Dr Jaswal.

Moreover, the focus should also be on nutrition, rest, and mental health. “Try to meditate, do deep breathing exercises to stay stress-free. While the diagnosis feels like the end of the world, it’s the beginning of a journey that can be managed with the help of timely treatment and care. So, don’t get anxious and follow the expert’s instructions to be able to beat cancer,” said Dr Jaswal.
