Hypertrichosis can occur in both genders with equal probability, said Dr Priyanka Kuri, consultant, dermatology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.

Lalit Patidar, 18, from Madhya Pradesh recently secured a Guinness World Record for having the hairiest face on a male, with 201.72 hairs per square centimetre. The teenager suffers from a rare condition known as hypertrichosis, popularly known as the “werewolf syndrome”.

Dr Priyanka Kuri, consultant, dermatology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, explained that hypertrichosis refers to an abnormal increase in hair growth owing to multiple factors. It could affect terminal or vellus hair, and the condition can either be genetic or congenital in nature.

While terminal hair is thick, coarse, and pigmented hair that grows on the scalp and other body parts, vellus hair – also known as peach fuzz – is shorter and thinner hair that grows on most of the body.

According to her, it is quite rare for certain diseases like porphyria or medications like minoxidil to result in hypertrichosis. When it comes to treatment, she suggested either shaving the face, or opting for laser reduction. “Laser hair reduction is the best option, especially if you have terminal hair. It works like a charm for this kind of hypertrichosis,” she said.

Dr Kuri added that hypertrichosis can happen in both the genders with equal probability. In a lot of cases, it is found to be a result of underlying hereditary issues.

Speaking to Guinness World Records, Patidar said, “It’s very rare that people are not treating me well. Most people are good to me. It depends on the person. The first day of school wasn’t so good because the other kids were scared of me, but when they got to know me, they realised I’m not so different from them.”

While he has been blessed with a supportive family and friends, not everyone has been kind. Patidar runs a YouTube channel where he shares daily glimpses into his routine, giving the audience a sneak peek of living a fulfilling life despite having hypertrichosis. Ignoring comments asking him to shave his face, he has decided to embrace his unique condition.
